Corde has been undertaking a batch of six schools in Milton Keynes. The briefs for three primary schools were very similar and a single design has been replicated to increase efficiency and reduce cost significantly.
It was required that the overarching designs should fit within the surrounding community and be aesthetically pleasing, especially in terms of colour and its contribution to the learning experience.
One aspect of the brief was carefully considering the design of ‘semi-public' spaces, such as offices and the parents' and community room, providing secure and controlled access to the school outside of school hours.
There was also a key requirement for circulation to be carefully planned, accounting for free movement, disabled access and the movement of equipment and teaching aids.
The first of the three projects to be completed, Whitehouse Primary School has distinctive landscaping. A trim trail and ‘forest school’ follows the lines of the sports areas, accommodating outdoor schooling during the summer period. Allotment gardens support this initiative located next to an external teaching area to the rear of the school, enabling pupils to grow their own plants and produce.
