ADP’s integrated design company Corde was appointed by Chesham Preparatory School to develop a masterplan in response to the school’s appraisal of future need. With a focus on the school’s key strengths, sport and creative arts, the masterplan includes the development of new swimming facilities and a performance hall.
Taking a “fabric first approach”, materials have been selected for their sustainability, as well as to complement adjacent historic buildings and rural surroundings. Red brick provides a respectful addition to the historic setting, while timber cladding neatly situates the design in its rural setting.
With environmental impact at the forefront of the design, MEP engineers, KJ Tait, have provided invaluable early input into the process, ensuring that the developments are sustainable both in construction and use.
Natural outdoor learning areas designed by ADP’s landscape team have also been incorporated into the design. This includes a ‘Teardrop Garden’ and the ‘Younger Years Gardening Club’. This work was funded by the school’s ‘Buy a Brick’ campaign, which gives parents and staff the opportunity to buy and personalise a brick with either a family, individual child’s or teacher’s name.
The work is due to complete at the end of 2018 in time for the school’s 80th birthday.
